The Opportunity

The Department of Mathematics at Simon Fraser University invites applications for a Lecturer position starting July 15, 2021.

Applicants should have at least a master’s degree in mathematics or applied mathematics; a PhD degree (completed or in progress) will be considered an asset.

Candidates must have clear commitment for a teaching career in undergraduate education in mathematics and a demonstrated excellence in teaching. This includes:

  • proven strength in face-to-face and/or online teaching in mathematics,
  • demonstrated interest in curriculum development; an interest in decolonizing/Indigenizing curricula would be an asset,
  • dedication to creating an environment that supports diverse populations and perspectives, and a commitment to creating inclusive learning experiences,
  • active participation in the pedagogical enhancement and scholarship of teaching and learning initiatives, and
  • involvement in STEM outreach activities; an interest in outreach with Indigenous Communities would be an asset.

Ability to teach various problem-solving strategies in a broad range of undergraduate courses, including Math 190 – Principles of Mathematics for Teachers and FAN X99 – Foundations of Analytical and Quantitative Reasoning, is a requirement.

The Department of Mathematics uses the workshop (learning centre) model to support students enrolled in lower division courses. The duties of the successful candidate will include coordination of a workshop and supervision and mentoring of teaching assistants affiliated with the workshop.

The Lecturer will be based on the Burnaby Campus, but may be assigned to teach courses at any SFU Campus.

The Lecturer will provide service to the Department, including membership on departmental committees, active participation in outreach activities and the creation of new outreach initiatives.
